One of the most popular cosmetics products available in the market is makeup. Cosmetics may also be referred as cosmetics, skin care products, personal care products, and skin care products. The word “cosmetics” itself brings in many definitions from different individuals and institutions. Some people may consider it to be a pure form of cosmetics while others consider it to be a type of food that can be eaten as well

Cosmetics generally refers to any cosmetic product that is used for making the skin more beautiful and appealing. There are several different types of cosmetics that are available on the market. They are divided into three categories namely health, beauty, and personal care products. Beauty cosmetics include cosmetics such as foundations, lipsticks, eyeliners, mascara, eye shadows, and blushes. Health cosmetics include facial cleansers, sunscreens, and bath and body products such as shower gels and soaps.

There are four classifications of cosmetics namely: synthetic / man-made chemicals, non-synthetic chemicals, natural health/herbal cosmetics, and therapeutic effect cosmetics. Synthetic/man-made chemicals are those that are produced by factories using certain inactive ingredients that can be added later to produce a new cosmetic product. Examples are polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic, mineral oils, dioxane, parabens, and phthalates. Non-synthetic chemicals are those that occur naturally and are widely used as additives in food and cosmetics. Examples are bovine insulin, beeswax, and carrageenans.

On the other hand, natural health/herbal cosmetics are cosmetics that contain therapeutic agents from plants or animals that help in the healing process of the skin. This classification includes lotions, creams, ointments, and gels. Both synthetic/man-made chemicals and natural health/herbal cosmetics can cause allergic reactions and should be avoided. A good rule of thumb is to choose cosmetics with ingredients that have been proven safe.

Lastly, we will discuss cosmetics as well as skincare products. Skincare products are cosmetics such as cleansers, toners, moisturizers, and exfoliates. Skincare products are categorized according to type to suit your needs (e.g. creams, lotions, sunscreens, and moleskin).

The above four types of beauty care cosmetics are just the tip of the iceberg. In addition, there are also a number of subcategories of beauty products that fall under the larger umbrella of cosmetics. For example, you can categorize lip balms, glosses, and lipsticks into moisturizing, protection, and accent products respectively. Then there are anti-aging formulas, body lotions, bath and shower products, makeups and concealers, eye shadows, blushes, and bronzers. Just like with skincare products, you can find almost every product under one umbrella term, such as cosmetics. However, the beauty industry is so huge that there is not only a need for labeling, but also subcategories, for cosmetics that may not be found on the labels.

As mentioned earlier, many of the cosmetics on the market fall into at least one of the four categories described above. This means that you have many options when shopping for cosmetics. You have to decide which type of product you want to purchase, whether it is deodorants perfumes, lotions, or cosmetics. No matter what your needs are, you should choose a formula that addresses them. That is how you can find the right formula that will give you everything you want and nothing you don’t.
